The assignment for this week sounded like fun and I’ve been waiting all week to have some time to give it a try. I started with Bitstrips, and came up with my first avatar. I found the site pretty easy to use, but I really don’t know the shape of my face, eyes or jaw. I guess I never looked that closely before! Anyway, I chose a few options, even adding a few wrinkles (although not too many - I don’t have to be completely honest here). I decided to dress my avatar in casual running attire and the background works pretty well because when I run it’s usually dark out!
After seeing other people’s avatars (all of which look really cool), I wanted to try Doppleme. Again, the site was easy to use, but I didn’t see as many choices in body construction. I did like that there were background choices.
I think creating avatars would be a fun assignment for kids. Creating personal avatars would give me a window into how my students view themselves. I also think it would be a lot of fun to have kids create avatars for literary or even historical figures. I can definitely work an avatar assignment into one or more of my novel units. I have to say that I’m getting tons of good ideas for technology integration from the ITDML program.
I’m not sure that I’ve found my perfect avatar yet, but I’m looking forward to experimenting with this form of expression.
